The 12V Camping Boom: How to Choose the Right Setup (Without Wasting Money)

The 12V camping industry has absolutely exploded over the last few years.
What used to be a simple battery and an esky has turned into full off-grid power systems with lithium batteries, DC-DC chargers, inverters, solar blankets, fridges, induction cooktops and even air conditioners.
And while the options are exciting… they can also be overwhelming.
At Roof Rack Solutions, we’re seeing more customers move into 4WD touring, van builds and hybrid trade + weekend setups. The big question is always the same:
“What 12V setup do I actually need?”
Let’s break it down properly.

Step 1: Be Honest About How You CampBefore buying anything, you need clarity.
Are you:
  • Weekend camping 2–3 nights at a powered site?
  • Free camping occasionally?
  • Touring remote areas for 1–2 weeks?
  • Living in your van full-time?
  • Running trade tools during the week and camping on weekends?
Your power usage determines everything.
Example:Weekend Warrior
  • 40–60L fridge
  • Phone charging
  • Camp lights
You don’t need a 300Ah lithium system. A quality 100–120Ah lithium with solar input is more than enough.
Touring Setup
  • Large fridge or dual-zone
  • Starlink
  • Diesel heater
  • Induction cooktop
  • Laptop charging
Now you’re in the 200–300Ah lithium range with proper charging infrastructure.
The biggest mistake people make is overbuilding or underbuilding.

Step 2: Understanding Lithium vs AGMAGM still has its place — mainly budget or light-use setups.
But lithium has changed the game:
  • Lighter
  • Faster charging
  • Deeper discharge capacity
  • Longer lifespan
For serious touring or frequent camping, lithium wins every time.
However… not all lithium batteries are equal.
Cheaper brands can be great value — but only if you choose wisely.

Step 3: Choosing Quality from Budget BrandsBrands like KickAss Products, Kings, and Enerdrive all sit at very different price points.
You don’t always need the most expensive option.
What matters is:
1. Battery Management System (BMS)The BMS protects your battery from overcharging, over-discharging and overheating.
Cheap batteries with poor BMS are where problems start.
2. Real Capacity RatingsSome cheaper brands inflate specs.
Look at:
  • Continuous discharge rate
  • Max charge current
  • Warranty length
3. Charger CompatibilityYour DC-DC charger must match your battery chemistry.
A mismatched system reduces lifespan and performance.
4. After-Sales SupportThis is where many budget setups fall apart.
If something fails, who do you call?
That’s why professional installation matters.

Step 4: The Charging System Is Just As ImportantA good battery with poor charging is like a big fuel tank with no fuel pump.
You need to consider:
  • DC-DC charger from the alternator
  • Solar input (fixed panels or blankets)
  • 240V shore charging
  • Proper cabling and fusing
Incorrect cable sizing is one of the biggest issues we see. Voltage drop kills performance.

Step 5: Safety FirstPoor 12V installs can:
  • Overheat
  • Melt wiring
  • Damage batteries
  • Void warranties
  • Create fire risk
Professional installation ensures:
  • Correct cable gauge
  • Proper circuit protection
  • Clean mounting
  • Secure ventilation
  • Compliance with safety standards
You’re not just buying gear — you’re building a power system.

Step 6: The Smart Way to Build Your SetupAt Roof Rack Solutions, we approach 12V systems the same way we approach roof racks:
Strength. Reliability. Suitability for purpose.
We don’t just sell boxes.
We build systems around how you actually use your vehicle.
Sometimes that means:
  • A simple portable lithium box.
  • Sometimes a fully integrated dual-battery system.
  • Sometimes a hybrid trade + touring build.
The goal isn’t the biggest system.
It’s the right system.
